DVSA - MOT special notice 02-21: MOT Connected equipment - READ THE SPECIAL NOTICE HERE

From 1 May 2021, exhaust gas analysers and diesel smoke meters will be able to connect directly to the MOT testing service

Who the rules apply to:
From 1 May 2021, any MOT centres that test class 4,5 and 7 vehicles, must have this connected equipment installed if they are:
1) Opening a new MOT centre
2) Reopening a closed MOT centre (this applies regardless of how long it’s been closed)
3) Changing ownership (where the MOT centre moves from one authorised examiner (AE) to another)
4) Replacing emissions testing equipment

Important site prerequisites required before we can connect your equipment - check your model in the overview section below:
1) A reliable internet connection is required at the location of the emissions equipment, either by WI-FI or preferably by Lan Cable.
(we can supply a dual band WI-FI dongle supporting 2.5  & 5Ghz WI-FI  at a cost of £50.00 enabling your WI-FI connection)

2) You will need to provide our engineers with your unique DVSA software keys (zipped file obtained from DVSA) in order to connect the equipment to the MOT testing service.

How to request a software key:

  1. Sign in to the MOT testing service.

  2. Go to your ‘Vehicle testing station’ page.

  3. Select ‘Request a key’ - you must select the keys for a "Combination unit"

  4. Follow the instructions to create and send the keys to your email address.

  5. Check your email to find your key - make sure your email address is correct in the MOT testing service as the key will be emailed to this email address.

  6. Open the email and copy the zipped attachment to a USB stick and give it to the engineer - the password to open the email attachment will be the site managers user ID that they use to sign in to the MOT testing service. If the site manager is not present on the installation day. please ensure that someone has their password available.

You must keep your key secure. Only give it to the engineer installing your equipment.

After the equipment is installed:
Connected equipment only sends results for live MOT tests – it does not have a test or trial mode.
On the day of your connection, it would help, to have available a "live test" in order to verify that your system is functioning correctly.
It will be the AEDMs and site managers responsibility to regularly check test logs to ensure connected equipment is sending results through correctly.

Final costings will depend on your preparation & requirements.
